Next Enrichment Programme offered in: June 2025
Ms. Daphne Sim is an educator who has been teaching Secondary Chemistry and Physics, as well as Primary Mathematics and Science, since 2014. In recent years, she has expanded her portfolio to include IB PYP learners. Previously from The Learning Lab, she has completed a Master of Education program (Curriculum & Teaching) at NIE and is currently pursuing professional development with the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She has decided to teach any students who want to take ownership of their own learning journey.
Though I have chosen to develop my teaching expertise in the scientific disciplines (for now), I believe that an educated person should be competent in most disciplines, and at the same time develop an expertise in at least one discipline. As such, my subject combinations have always been a mixture of humanities and sciences. One can see my choices as a reflection of my belief in becoming a well-rounded individual capable of learning anything. Hence, I hope to inculcate this belief in the learners I interact with.
In recent years, I am currently pursuing professional development towards IB-related courses such as Project Zero's "Visible Thinking" and attending international education conferences to expand my worldview and portfolio.

To increase the probability of the learner achieving the ability to take initiative and learn independently, by using science and mathematics as a medium.
Much of the content knowledge we learn may never be needed in most jobs. However, the understanding of scientific and mathematical terms and concepts does empower one to self-learn in this digital era. If one desires to take a step further, mastering the disciplinary thinking developed through the years of immersion in our education system will allow one to develop an expertise in their respective fields. Learning is a lifelong process, and I believe there is more value in a self-initiated learner to an employer than one who reacts with helplessness to steep learning curves.
Lessons will be loosely organised into the following phases:
Understanding the Subject Matter - Learning and Application of Concepts and Skills
Achieving Excellence - Refining Answering Techniques & Gaining Exposure to Challenging Questions
Consultation - Clarifying Doubts & Reviewing Strengths and Areas needing Improvement
A two-way conversation between the tutor and learner. Instead of giving answers, I will guide them to a logically derived solution, then refine their keywords used. While the lessons are initially planned by me, eventually, I hope to hear my students start the lesson with "I've got some questions after trying out some practices earlier, could we go through these instead?".
Through my experience, I have found that learners with the following disposition will meet with the most improvement under my tutelage. Hence, I hope that the following points can act as a reference to parents to determine our suitability in this parent-educator-learner relationship.
Learner's disposition:
The learner himself/herself wants to be tutored, and is willing to learn how to become an independent learner
The learner is willing to unlearn bad habits, if any. (This especially refers to students who used to excel by memorizing or being spoon fed at lower levels, and later face difficulties in higher levels where more critical thinking is expected of candidates in examinations)
Parents' disposition:
The willingness to give us the time and space to focus on learning
The willingness and awareness to reflect on your own attitudes, beliefs and worldview and how they affect your child
